Cyclone Gabrielle: Before and After in the hardest hit parts of Hawke's Bay
Cyclone Gabrielle hit Hawke's Bay hard on February 13th and 14th 2023, causing massive devastation to the region, especially to flood prone areas. After the cyclone passed and the flooding subsided, aerial imagery was captured in order to record the damage. This imagery is free to view on the LINZ website, linked here: data.linz.govt.nz/layer/112726-hawkes-bay-010m-cyclone-gabrielle-aerial-photos-2023/
This video was made to showcase the scale of the widespread destruction Hawke's Bay has suffered, and to spread awareness for the region's recovery needs.

So sad It's been demolished, There is only one building left now. And It's so small and not much to see. Still cool. I've only seen it once from afar when I was driving past. I've always been interested in Paranormal and started researching about this place. Truly interesting! Well done for actually going in, If I saw it before it demolished I would've been too scared lol

Great walk and pretty easy going. I did this back in Feb in perfect weather, staying at Central Whirinaki (whio in the nearby river) but as I was ahead of schedule I skipped overnighting at Mangamate. Absolutely beautiful bush and trees. Certainly ended up with clean boots - around Mangamate much of the track was thru/across streams! Highly recommended but next time I'll do the full loop which I know is at another level.

Thanks for the video - it certainly inspired me to go the the Whirinaki Forest Park. Sorry you had disappointing weather - it isn't always like that! I did this loop back in February in perfect conditions. I had planned to continue on to Upper Te Hoe, Mangakahika huts etc on the Te Pua-a-Tāne Circuit but the forecast wasn't great (but frustratingly the bad weather didn't happen at all). After overnighting at the lovely Central Whirinaki hut I planned a second night at Mangamate hut but arrived surprisingly early so just walked out to River Road. That section was mostly in the river - not a problem at all on a warm summer day but I imagine pretty tricky after heavy rain or in the winter. Despite good weather and in February I was surprised not to see another soul, and certainly had the hut to myself. This is one of my favourite North Island places and next time I will definitely do the longer Te Pua-a-Tāne Circuit.

That van at the beginning. Doubt its a Combi at all. Look up a photo of a CA Bedford - which is what I reckon that van is. I used to have a CA Bedford. It had sliding doors for driver and passenger and hinged doors at the rear. It was no racer, but I wish I still had it today - would be very handy indeed.
